Country Map and Other New Features!

+2

I've been working hard this week to bring some new features to JetPunk. Here they are!

  • Your personal country map. You can now create a map of all the countries you have ever been to. Just go here. This can also be found by clicking your user name, choosing "Your Account", and then clicking the link below "Countries Visited Map".
  • User profile page. Other logged-in users will be able to see these maps and other info on your User Profile page. Here's mine, for example.
  • Quiz creator ranks. If you have written quizzes, you will also notice that your user profile has a quiz creator rank, based on the number of times your quizzes have been taken. Relessness is currently our #1 quiz creator!
  • Easier editing. We made another small shortcut which I hope you will find convenient. Now, if you are on the page of one of your own live quizzes, click your name. In the menu that appears, you will find a direct link to edit that quiz..
  • Hope you enjoy the new features!

The countries list for the country map is missing Montenegro.

Great! What about allowing users to display on their profile page '5 favourite quizzes of other users'?

I went to Europe several times and skipped Amsterdam every time! But it's definitely one of my most likely future destinations.

I suppose you've been in Rome since since I only count 21 green shapes which means the 22nd is probably the Vatican ;)

Will there ever be states/provinces for China, Russia or India? It seems the other large countries have their states/provinces broken out.

I'd particularly like to see this as a feature

Should definitely happen for at least China, India and Brazil. Russia is big, but it has 80+ oblasts, (its equivelant to provinces or states), which may be too much for a feature such as this.

India should definitely be divided. The sheer range of cultural, cuisine, religious and linguistic differences are heavily influenced by the state borders that one is in.

(A lot more so than the United States where basically everyone eats hamburgers and speaks English).

India is very small though, it would clutter the map. The USA is larger. In the south of the us spanish is spoken, french is spoken near Quebec border and indigenous native languages are spoken in Hawaii and indigenous territorries.

I specifically remember doing China and India state/province quizzes. Russia however isn't there as a map quiz. Have asked but I'm guessing the amount of work required is why it hasn't been done.

I tried to make a map quiz on the 83 oblasts of Russia, but nearing the end I realized the map I was using oddly lacked one oblast :(

Fun ideas! I've not been particularly drawn by "rankings", because they can never measure the degree of fun and intellectual stimulation and learning they provide, which has been what's motivated me here from Day One. That's probably just as well, because going by "rankings", I'll be pretty static - #1 on quizzes made, and #3 on total quiz hits, pretty much forever!

Brilliant idea but I found that one of the countries I had visited (Montenegro) wasn't available as an option and then checked and found that UAE and Dominica weren't options either.

Regardless of that I love the idea :)

These are an abundance of new features Dan :D #117 for me, quite surprising as that was unexpected to be that high. Also the addition of the edit from quiz page is very much appreciated. Some don't know the pain of trying to find a quiz, especially when you have thousands to search through like Jerry would.

It was still easy to find your quiz before the new feature. All you had to do was press Ctrl + F and search for your quiz on the create / edit a quiz page.

Nice. The map should be very interesting. Surprised to be #466! Do you know how many users there are. Also it would be nice if you added a feature where we are notified when someone replies to one of our comments.

This wouldn't be easy but what about adding a 'personal map' where the colour reflects the points scored in the regional country quizzes? Eg if you got 5 points for the French regions France would be coloured in green. Of course regional quizzes don't exist (yet!) for all countries and you'd have to decide whether to use the 'by map' versions or the standard ones

That wouldn't work for a few languages. E.g. Arabic? Essentially every country in the Middle East claims it as their own. What about Bengali? The largest city that speaks Bengali is in India, although there is an academy for the language in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. There is no single country to represent various languages like these, mainly as a result of colonialism and partition.
+2

I don't refer to languages but to regions of a country. So if you get 5 points on the 'states of india' quiz India will get coloured in queen

The choice of countries divided into states is pure anglocentrism - USA, Canada, Australia and the comparatively tiny UK.

The popular "visited countries" sites (e.g. http://www.mytravelmap.tk ) include at least Russia, China, India and Brazil, with possible inclusion of Argentina, Mexico, Greenland, South Africa, Japan (maybe not official division, but just the main islands and island groups? ) and other large countries.

Two Russian federal subjects are larger than Alaska and only the two/three federal cities smaller than Rhode Island though larger than D.C.

It reflects the audience of our site. I doubt many people have visited Irkutsk. Why should I spend hours of my time cluttering the map?

Ok then. It's probably obvious that I have no clue how much time it takes to do this :) Maybe I'll know after I try to make the map for Russian federal subjects quiz, if nobody beats me to it.

(I've been to Irkutsk :)

It would be nice to add Polish voivodeships given the influx of Polish users on this site - as there are only 16 of them.

I love the feature of personal map :) However I too miss the more detailed map of Russia; have been only to St Petersburg, 135 kilometers from the border of European Union. Still according the map I have visited the whole Russia incl Irkutsk, Vladivostok etc.
