So, lemme see...I don't even have to be smart enough to know to put the second 'x' on 'Foxx,' but I had better know EXACTLY how to spell 'Clemens' to the letter, or it won't work. Weird.

Is Clemens hard to spell?

So, I got everyone except Kershaw and Peavy. Jeez, I have never even heard of Kershaw - I wouldn't have gotten him in a multiple choice. I've heard of Peavy, but I didn't know he was that good. And I typed Hubbell twice - I thought for sure he had won the Triple Crown.

how did you get bucky walters and hippo vaughn, but not ever heard of Clayton Kershaw (who pitches for the Dodgers and won the Cy young last year)? Are you 112 years old?

@meilankev: I was sure Hubbel was there too, and ALSO typed him twice. Also was surprised not to see Greg Maddux, Tom Seaver, and Bob Gibson.

Certainly, Maddux was great - but I never looked at him as a K pitcher. The problem with Gibson and Seaver were all the other great NL pitchers in their era (Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, Perry, Jenkins, Carlton, et al). It's difficult to win a triple crown with so many other great pitchers competing with you.

And the mound was higher at the time, which contributed to the narrow spread between the great pitchers of that time. Never the less I was surprised that Gibson didnt qualify during his 1.2 ERA year...But then again he wasnt nearly the Strike out pitcher that Koufax and Carlton were.

Yaz is still my favorite all time player..as he was my fathers before me...So, while I am happy that someone finally got the Triple Crown it is a little bitter sweet...Asking who the last player to win the triple crown was, was always my way of rooting out who was a real red sox fan.

The alternative question is: who led the league with the lowest batting average? Also Yaz, the following year, with .301, displacing the legendary Elmer Flick, who hit .308 in 1905.
Don't get me wrong--I became a Red Sox fan in 1967 (as a result of living in DC, where the Senators were usually out of contention by the Fourth of July). 1968 was the year that pitchers dominated the game so thoroughly that they lowered the mound the following year. So .301 was, in context, not so shabby.
