8/20. Can't believe that 60% know Betrothed.

I think "beg" should count for "to implore"

Are any of these folks native speakers of English? Yes, becalmed - the only word ever used for a sailing vessel that has encountered calm conditions and stalled. The greatest threat to survival in areas like the Sargasso Sea where a transatlantic sailing vessel could be becalmed for weeks. And "betrothed" is what you get when you get engaged, it's used even in engagement announcements. Some words in some of the vocabulary quizzes are outdated or extremely unusual, but these two are not. Obviously our schools in the United States really ARE subpar if even normal words are not taught or used.

I would argue that "bewitch" means to charm.
Quizmaster replies:
I agree. Added that as an acceptable answer. Thanks!

Besmirch ("Make (something) dirty or discolored") is a MUCH better answer for "make unclean; pollute"" than befoul.

Bequeath means about the same thing as Bestow

I think that bedazzle is a strong alternative for beguile.

100% agree with bedazzle, that definitely means to charm or captivate, probaby more so than bewitch

Another vote for "besmirch" in addition to "befoul". But: 1. "bewildered" doesn't mean "benighted" OR "charmed"; 2. "belittle" doesn't mean "scold/chide"; 3. "bequeath" ONLY refers to inheritance (literal or figurative); and 4. "beget" (which is present tense) is NOT an alternate spelling of "begat" (which is past tense).
