Would Sudan still be on here now that it's split into two countries? Is the northern part still bigger than Libya???

High averages for these country quizzes. Either the average person has studied geography far more rigorously than I expected or people are cheating...
Mar 26, 2012
(55)
Or most of the people who take these quizzes are not what you would call "average people." Consider the fact that the most popular quiz on this site by far is the Countries of the World quiz, which is a lot harder to master than this one.

@Meghan16, I think the high averages are due to the fact that a lot of us JetPunk regulars have mastered the Countries of the World quiz, and after you know all the countries in the world all of these quizzes become a lot easier :)

Should the moon be counted as US land area as they got there first?
Sep 5, 2012
(66)
Absolutely not, though that is more due to the moon and other celestial bodies being declared terra nullius by the Outer Space Treaty in the late 60s. Something about 'common heritage of mankind.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty

@Quizmaster is it possible we could get Sudan off of here? Now that it has been separated, it's not over 1,000,000 sq mi. Angola or Niger could replace it, as they are all so close in size there are conflicts in different sources.

Quizmaster
Hi there. I just double-checked and the quiz is correct. Sudan used to be even bigger. Keep in mind that this quiz uses square kilometers, not square miles.

You're right, I double-checked meself, thanks for the reply. It's just hard to believe it's still bigger even though it was cut nearly in half. Sudan was just huge.

Eventually the USA will beat China since Hawaii is still growing increasing it's land area
Oct 19, 2013

The US is also larger than Canada by some measures. Maybe it will sneak into the #2 spot.
Apr 6, 2014

In addition to being the two smallest on the list, common map projections make Peru and Chad look smaller than they are since they are near the equator. That might be part of the reason many miss those.

I think this quiz'es name is wrong. I assume the data was taken from Wikipedia. I checked the article "List of countries and dependencies by area" and ordered the countries by LAND area, instead of TOTAL area. By land area the top 5 would be: Russia, China, USA, Canada, Brazil. By total area the top 5 would be: Russia, Canada, China, USA, Brazil. I suggest that you remove the "Land" from the quiz'es name.
Aug 2, 2013
(55)
good point and I never realized that the US was actually larger than Canada in terms of land area. I guess it's just so hard to see in 2D projections. Very interesting. Also, Chad drops off the list and Niger gets on if you look at land area only, and China is #3 regardless of metric. Must be using something other than Wikipedia...

US has less land area than China btw. The US counts not just coastal teritorries but sea territories also, the only country to do so. In terms of land area alone its Russia>China>USA>Canada. In terms of land area + lakes it's Russia>Canada>China>USA. (imo this is the term you should use, as the rest of the world does when it thinks of land territory. After all, under the lakes is... land) In terms of land area + lakes + coastal waters it's Russia>Canada>China>USA In any of those ways China is larger than the US. Even if you were to clue in the sea territories, China would probably still beat the US but due to the tiny Spratly Islands dispute it can't get a conclusive figure.

In other words the China land + inland lakes area is: 9,596,961 sq km (excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan). USA land + inland lakes area is: 9,526,468 sq km. The figure up on the list there is an inflated one that includes not only the coastal waters, but also sea waters (that the CIA factbook uses, but no other country does). See notes 3 and 4 on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_area
