I think this quiz'es name is wrong. I assume the data was taken from Wikipedia. I checked the article "List of countries and dependencies by area" and ordered the countries by LAND area, instead of TOTAL area. By land area the top 5 would be: Russia, China, USA, Canada, Brazil. By total area the top 5 would be: Russia, Canada, China, USA, Brazil. I suggest that you remove the "Land" from the quiz'es name.

good point and I never realized that the US was actually larger than Canada in terms of land area. I guess it's just so hard to see in 2D projections. Very interesting. Also, Chad drops off the list and Niger gets on if you look at land area only, and China is #3 regardless of metric. Must be using something other than Wikipedia...

US has less land area than China btw. The US counts not just coastal teritorries but sea territories also, the only country to do so. In terms of land area alone its Russia>China>USA>Canada. In terms of land area + lakes it's Russia>Canada>China>USA. (imo this is the term you should use, as the rest of the world does when it thinks of land territory. After all, under the lakes is... land) In terms of land area + lakes + coastal waters it's Russia>Canada>China>USA In any of those ways China is larger than the US. Even if you were to clue in the sea territories, China would probably still beat the US but due to the tiny Spratly Islands dispute it can't get a conclusive figure.

In other words the China land + inland lakes area is: 9,596,961 sq km (excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan). USA land + inland lakes area is: 9,526,468 sq km. The figure up on the list there is an inflated one that includes not only the coastal waters, but also sea waters (that the CIA factbook uses, but no other country does). See notes 3 and 4 on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_area

As you can see from actually reading what I wrote, China is far larger when looking at *land* area. This quiz, however, includes all inland bodies of water, which pushes the *total* area of the US up ahead of China (mostly thanks to the Great Lakes). So yes, I do know for a fact that China's land area is much larger than the United States', because it is a fact.

fair enough that USA counts the inland waters, as many countries do, China included - but the US also counts the coastal waters (no other country counts this). On top of that it also includes all sea territories, vast swathes of ocean well out in the Pacific and Atlantic. Read the smallprint in the CIA factbook/ website. The reality is China 9,640,821km2, USA 9,526,468 km2.

South Africa is the southernmost country in Africa. It borders Nairobi, Botswana, and Zimbabwe to the north, Mozambique to the east, the Indian Ocean is to the south and east, and the Atlantic Ocean is to the west. Lesotho and Swaziland are two tiny nations that are totally within or almost within South Africa.

Can I ask for an explanation of why overseas territories are not counted as part of the nation's land area? Bringing up the Denmark and Greenland issue, Greenland is a piece of land on Earth. Therefore it makes up part of the earth's surface. What you are asking for is the nations on Earth with the largest land area, and whether it is physically connected to the mainland of the nation that owns it or not, Greenland is still a part of Earth, and is under the control of Denmark. I just don't see how water separating the two parts should prevent it from being counted. Can someone please explain?
