The reason that Miami isn't included: In Miami proper more people speak Spanish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami#Languages

Regardless of more people speaking Spanish in Miami, the official language is English; it's an American city; therefore, IMHO, it should be included in this quiz..

the official language is NOT English, same as every other American city. and regardless of whether or not it's official it doesn't make the language more widely spoken.

That's correct. There is no official language or religion of the good 'ol USA

English isn't the official language of the US. The US has no official language.

I think it is a huge oversight not to include Delhi. First, English is an official language of India and the majority of people in Delhi, a city of at least 17 million, speak English.

but is it more commonly spoken than Hindi?

Most people in the UK have convinced themselves that they're the reason that English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. Holding on to this worldview, actual facts can be quite distressing.

I didn't bother to guess Miami after living in South Florida. You can't even shop at the mall if you don't speak a little Spanish...half the employees don't or won't speak English even to customers.

I got 23 (missed 4). But I missed Tampa, and I actually live in the Tampa Bay region (about 5 miles north of Tampa city limits)!!! That's pitiful. I also should not have missed Birmingham (tried Leeds and Liverpool). I actually don't mind missing Dubai and Minneapolis - those were tougher. It's funny, I guessed MIlwaukee, Indianapolis, Kansas City, and even Memphis - but no Minneapolis. Oh well...

Dubai is not an English speaking city. In fact can anyone there speak English? Most of the normal residents probably cant, and most of the immigrant workers cant, so that just leaves a few of the super rich, and the tourists. If so, the same can be said for pretty much any major city in the world.

I was also surprised to see Dubai, but, having actually been there (I'm guessing from your comment you have not), it does make sense. One might think that Arabic is more commonly spoken, but, fewer than 18% of the residents of Dubai are actually Emirati. The rest are foreigners. The majority of those foreigners are from India but there are also many from Bangladesh, Pakistan, the USA, the UK, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc etc. Guess what language all of those people use when they need to speak to one another? You're wrong that the immigrant workers cannot speak English. Actually sometimes I find that the Bengali floor sweepers speak English better than my Saudi students (I teach English in Saudi). And for Indians and Filipinos... almost all of them learn English in school in their home countries. The Arabs there adopt English because it really is more practical to speak English in Dubai than Arabic.

Hong Kong = Cantonese, Mumbai = Marathi, Singapore = Malay

There does not seem to be a consistent logic to this quiz.. how do you define 'english speaking' city... official language / business language / popularly spoken language ... who is included -- residents / expats / tourists... Many cities in Asia will make the cut, depending on how you define 'english speaking'.

The logic of the quiz is simple. If a plurality of the residents speak English, the city is listed.

Zulu, Afrikaans and Xhosa make up the largest part, in SA only around 8-9% of the population has English as their first language.

I tried a few South African cities as well but wasn't surprised to see them not included given the huge variety of languages spoken in South Africa.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the population of Washington, D.C. was 632,323 on July 1, 2012. Also, I have lived in Dubai and I can tell you that it is a lot less English-speaking than the big South African cities (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, where I have also lived). These cities are also bigger than Dubai. So, I think they should be in there, although I cannot point you to a census offhand. I'm sure the info isn't difficult to find.
