Technically, the book featuring the Mad Hatter is called Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland is the name of the movie adaptions.

John Gardner, a not insignificant American writer, wrote a novel entitled Grendel which is a modern retelling of the Beowulf story. Certainly Beowulf is the most famous work -- but lots of people read Grendel the modern novel.

"Les Chandeliers de l'évêque" won't work for Jean Valjean? Technically that is the name of the story featuring him.
