I'm surprised that the percentage of English speakers in Australia is so low. It's interesting that Guyana and Suriname speak English.

No it isn't 'cuz we have aboriginies' - they make up a tiny proportion of our population and most of them now speak english as a first language anyway. it's because we have a lot of migration. Remember the question in this quiz is not how many people speak english (in australia it would be in the 90%s) but how many speak it as a *first language* which counts out all our asian immigrants.

Where are you getting this data? There is no way only 53% list English as their first language in Canada. Even with the Fench in Quebec and the multicultural cities it has to be higher than that.

Missed Guyana, Suriname and Belize. I would have thought the first two would have been French speaking, I can't say I know a lot about those countries though! Found this one tougher than the Spanish one though.

I can hardly believe Suriname is up there. Up to 20 languages are spoken in Suriname. Most of the people speak Dutch or the local Sranantongo.
Quizmaster replies:
I removed Suriname. I researched it on Wikipedia. On one page, they said 55% speak English as a first language. However, on the main Suriname page, it says 60% speak Dutch as a first language. So, I'm going with that.

I don't know about Belize. It's true that English is the official language, but not many speak it. The CIA World Factbook has English at 3.?%, with Spanish at 46%.

How the heck does Jamaica speak more English than Britain?
2011-11-01

Madison - few maori speakers learn it as a first language. Also, Australia has a very high number of immigrants who continue to teach their children their native language before english
