"Feudalism. why not feudal. does the -ism really make a difference?" Yes, it does. Feudalism is "the system of serfs and lords" which is what the queston asks; feudal is an adjective relevant to that system.

"any long narrow cleft or crack" is not the same as "deep inlet between cliffs" therefore fissure does not really work for fjord. Also, as was said, feudal does not work for feudalism as feudal is an adjective pertaining to the system of feudalism, not the system itself (as the question states).
