I just heard Walk Like an Egyptian on the radio during an 80's weekend - that held up surprisingly well. Really good song, even now.

I believe All Along The Watchtower was originally a Bob Dylan song. Jimi just crushed it.

It accepted Dylan.

I agree that Bob Dylan should be displayed as answer. Jimi's version is very nice, but not the original, and Bob Dylan is well known as well.

Original or not, Hendrix's version is more well known.

interesting fact, Bob Dylan has never had a #1 billboard top 100 hit, but at least a couple other artists have had #1 hits covering his songs, including Hendrix(all along the watchtower), and Guns N' Roses (knockin' on heavens door). Shows how great of a songwriter he is.

Interesting facts: Jimi Hendrix is a 1-hit wonder in the U.S. His only Top 40 song? You guessed it. Frank Stallone's All Along The Watchtower.

Even though Bob Dylan wrote and first performed All Along The Watchtower and he is, after all Bob Dylan and doesn't have to worry about cashing in, he has always performed the song closer to Hendrix's version than his own. He says Hendrix got it right and it's the way it should be done.

Bob Dylan's song "Like a Rolling Stone" was the most popular song in the US for a period that didn't quite line up with the Billboard Chart. Cashbox, a competitor for Billboard, has that song hitting #1. What to take from this? Charts have arbitrary cutoff days for their "weekly chart" and arbitrary values for airplay versus singles purchases so knowing what peaks at #1 isn't a good indication of a song's actual popularity or financial success.

I don't think you need the apostrophe in Summer of 69. The song isn't about the year 1969.

I always thought it was. Read the wikipedia on the song and learned something new. Anyway....looking at the album cover Bryan Adams spelled it with the apostrophe.

No idea who did the original American Pie, but I'd think Madonna's version is at least as famous.

Don Maclean did the original, and I don't think Madonna's is as famous (but I'm probably just biased). Though, since the first lines are the same, Madonna could be an acceptable answer.

I didn't even know Madonna had covered it. I've only ever heard the original and the Weird Al parody.

if Hendrix is acceptable instead of Bob Dylan, then why Madonna is not?

Feb 17, 2016
Technically it's the Hendrix version in the question, the opening line in the Dylan original is ''There must be some way out of here", whilst the Hendrix version (which the question gives) is "There must be some kind of way out of here"

Just an aesthetic, but the answers for "Big wheels keep on turning / Carry me home to see my kin," "Well East Coast girls are hip / I really dig those styles they wear," and "Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner" are in the opposite order when compared with the other responses.
