The mountains themselves are very tall; the tallest are almost 10,000 feet from base to height. They just have a disadvantage compared to others in this quiz because their bases are at or near sea level.

How could that possibly be helpful? If we asked you if 7'1" Shaquille O'Neal was taller than 5'0" Danny DeVito... you wouldn't be able to answer until we gave you their heights in centimeters?
reply
delete
Feb 17, 2015
(62)
It might help you exclude some countries. For example, if you know that no mountain in the Alps has a height of more than 5000m, you wouldn't try countries like France or Italy. I guess that's why you get the heights in the first place.
delete
Feb 17, 2015
(69)
You know what else would help you exclude Italy? Type in Italy. Then you know it must me some place with higher mountains than Italy.

(66)
It would be just as helpful as having the height in feet for those (very few) people around the world who think in feet. If it was worth including that, why would meters not be worth it?
delete
Feb 23, 2015
(69)
It just doesn't make any difference. It's filling up space in the hints column. NOBODY here is visualizing what 29,000 feet looks like and saying "oh YEAH... of course Nepal. If you had said 10,000 meters I would have had a completely different picture in my head." If it's helpful at all it might simply be in comparing the relative heights of the countries and to that end using any standardized unit of measurement would work just fine. You could measure in inches, leagues, miles or parsecs and still see the same relative difference.
delete
Apr 9, 2015
(45)
No, but we are not just here to win points and that's why it was fun in the first place to have the heights given here. If you are used to metric datas, that's just easier to consider what you read here if it's in meters. That's all.
delete
May 21, 2016
(69)
I disagree that it's any easier at all. I can visualize 2 meters. I can visualize 6 feet. When you extend that to the thousands of feet or thousands of meters, the unit you are using becomes irrelevant.
delete

(71)
I have difficulty on those quizzes that use kilometers when guessing closest cities, so I can see how this makes a difference for those who don't use feet for measuring height. Our medical industry already uses metric, I don't know why the rest of the country doesn't switch. Calculations are much easier. This is just my humble opinion, and I have no delusions it will ever happen - at least in my lifetime.
delete
Feb 17, 2017
(69)
Sorry not buying it at all. The reason km and miles between cities makes a difference is because we're used to looking at maps and visually converting distances of inches or centimeters into miles or kilometers. *and* even if that weren't true, it *still* doesn't matter when what you are asking for is the highest 20 countries in the world. *How* high they are in a specific unit is irrelevant! They're still the highest. People are just whining to whine.

Feb 17, 2017
(69)
and for anyone out there who really has memorized the exact height in meters for every peak in the world (nobody commenting here I'd bet money)... then given their awesome head for numbers it should be quite simple to look at the height in feet, do a little bit of math, and figure out the lowest peak here is roughly 1/3 lower than the peak of Everest. If you know how high Everest is, then it's pretty simply to calculate and figure out the bottom threshold. If you don't know exactly how high Everest is, then, as stated before, the heights are irrelevant and wouldn't help you anyway.
