That's what threw me too - hometown is such a modern and US term, I immediately (and for the first time) thought it was Lecter.

usually it's only about things from one particular country they have some deep seated resentment toward. Or, once in while, something from popular culture that they don't like. Rarely about things that they simply don't know in general.
