Number one is wrong - it's the Sorcerers stone.

Either answer is accepted. Original version is Philosopher's Stone, later changed for America.

Philosopher's Stone" is the British name of the Book; "Sorcerer's Stone" is the American name. In Real History, Alchemists like Nicholas Flamel tried to discover the PS with all the power defined; in the story, Flamel succeeded.
The Marketing Men in suits assume that Americans are dumb and would think "HP and the PS" was a text-book on Philosophy, so they changed the title

I assume that means you forgot to rule out people like me who memorized their 600 page philosophy textbook and got a 127% in the college course (and did I mention I'm 14?) So yeah, I'd think before you post next time, "Mr. Americans-are-so-fat-and-uneducated-and-know-nothing-about-anything", because you just got owned.

actually it was changed because the connotation of "philosopher" is different in the different countries. In the UK, philosopher means basically what sorcerer means in the US: basically, wizard. But in America, philosopher means more like scholar. Hence the name change.

Philosopher doesn't mean sorcerer anywhere, sorcerer means someone who has magic powers such as a Wizard whereas as a philosopher is someone who studies philosophy which is the study of knowledge, reality and existence. In no way shape or form or in any universe is the study of knowledge synonymous with Wizard.

They didn't just change the title of the first book. They changed the language throughout all the books for Americans. If you buy the British versions the vocabulary is markely different. So, if you're serious HP fans you'd HAVE to have read both versions if not JUST the British version and therefore you'd KNOW that The Philosopher's Stone was the name of the first book.

I am American, and have only read the American versions of the books, but reading comments from other Americans on here embarrasses me. I know Rowling is British and wrote the books in "British English" therefore I answered book 1 with "Philosopher's Stone." It's people like some of the above commenters that forced the publishers to "translate" the books into "American English." Quite saddening, really.

Ok according to wikipedia (take it as you like) "Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children's book.[14] They thought that a child would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title and,[32] after some discussion, the American edition was published in October 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.[14] Rowling claimed that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.[33] Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from UK English "crumpets" to US English "muffin". While Rowling accepted the change from both UK English "mum" and Seamus Finnegan's Irish variant "mam" to "mom" in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books. However Nel consid
