Sea lions technically are seals.

Sea lions and seals are actually very different - they are as similar to each other as a walrus is to either one of them. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/seal-sealion.html

@THobbes1651: The specification was required due to there being two different species of seal in the quiz.

Should replace the nutria question. Only a 5% success rate. Way too hard.

Eh, not really. They were only ever mentioned in elementary school and I still remembered. It adds that little bit of extra difficulty.

I agree with dannozanno. The nutria is way too hard!

Coypu also works for nutria. That's what I know it as.

Didn't know how to spell "Narwhal", spelled it "Narwal" and it wasn't counted. Would be helpful if it was changed!

Nope. Separate species.

good quiz, nice array of similar animals to make you think hard - took me a bit to remember the other name for "pilot whale" but I finally remembered. However, since you were being pretty specific - you properly accepted "orca" for killer whale (killer whale being more of a nickname), so you probably should accept "cachalot" for sperm whale, as that is it's real name and sperm whale is another nickname like above.

Lol, how come "elephant seals" only have 34%! They are sooo easy to recognise~!

@KatM, I knew it was a seal, I just couldn't for the life of me remember which type. I knew it wasn't your typical seal, though.
I knew narwhal, too, but couldn't think of it in time.

I got them all with 1:48 left. It helps that I've seen almost all of them in person -- except the sperm whale and the narwhal, which are very distinctive. I've only seen a hippo in a zoo, but I've seen the rest in the wild. Nutria are a real pest in Lousiana swamps and have spread to South Florida and even South Carolina. They were introduced to Louisiana by McIlhenny (the Tabasco Sauce family), who was raising them for the pelts.

There are tons of nutria here in Oregon too. But I have noticed people from other places generally have no clue. I like to describe them as giant river rats.

PS - manatee - I recognised it, but couldn't remember the name. Aren't they the things that sailors in the old days took for mermaids? Mind, you'd have to have been at sea for a VERY long time . . .
