You should let opossum be spelled with two p's. I realize misspelling are probably not the best to accept, but I could swear that when I was a kid we were spelling it with two p's. Was it ever changed from two to one I wonder?

Not marsupials, monotremes. Marsupials give live birth to young that are not fully developed, while monotremes lay eggs. There are only 5 monotremes in the world. Only the duck-billed platypuss is exclusive to Australia, while the 4 echidnas are split between Australia and New Guinea. Meanwhile there are many marsupials in both Australia and the Americas.

They got the name from the noise they make. Being nocturnal, the first sign early settlers had that the devils were out there in the bush was their eerie shrieking.

Right on, when camping in Australia the Tasmanian Devil and the Koala and the Possum make incredible noises. The Devil .... screeches, The Koala grunts like a wild pig and the Possum makes loud sighing and gasping noises as well as screeching ......... boy that puts the willies up you in the middle of the night!

When you hear a koala grunting at night, it's generally because they're putting the willies up someone. They're randy little beggars. And a bit rapey. They force the female koala further and further along a branch, until they have no choice but to fall out of the tree, or give in to the male koala's advances. Not as cute as they look.
