Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) has slipped out of the table completely - along with Serbo-Croat and Yoruba. Three more Indian dialects to remember instead.

Also, most people in Indonesia do not speak Indonesian as their first language, but rather Javanese, Sundanese, or one of the several other related languages of the various islands. Indonesian is more like a lingua franca.

Though it is the official language of Ethiopia, according to the figures on wikipedia there are not many native speakers. Fewer than 20 million.

Where does Wikipedia get those numbers? 68 million native French speakers seems quite low. There are over 60M people in France alone (all of whom speak French). By the time you add Quebec, half of Belgium, parts of Switzerland, the elite of Haiti, a few Americans (Maine / Louisiana), plus a whole bunch of people in former African colonies who learn French from birth, there must be far more speakers than that. I am speaking of native speakers, of course, not the people who learn French in school as a foreign language.

The definition of "native speaker" has long been a bone of contention amongst linguists. It looks as though the table here is using one of the stricter definitions.

"Wu" Chinese is also known commonly as "Traditional" Chinese - could that be accepted?

rajasthani, awadhi, Marwari and bhojpuri are just dialects. They are not yet recognised by Indian State.

You're supposedly sourcing this from Wikipedia, where Malay (aka Bahasa, Indonesian) is listed as having 77 million native speakers which would place it behind Wu, not at 37 million where it currently sits.

How can Thai have 26 million speakers if Thailand has over 50 million inhabitants
Dec 23, 2013

26 million native speakers. There are areas of Thailand where people natively speak languages such as Khmer or Malay and know Thai as a second language.

some of the languages listed here are actually dialects! they do not have a different written set of words, so they can't be counted as language. i would know, i speak both Cantonese and Putonghua (Mandarin).

I don't see any 68 millions on the wikipedia page! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language : in the first paragraph, it's said "French is estimated having 110 million native speakers".

As I said in another quiz, there are between 15 et 30 million native speakers in DRC. They are clearly omitted from your list... I know that things are complicated in Africa but this is erroneous. The page I gave is also wikipedia, so wikipedia is indeed inconsistent, don't you think ?

Yes, I guess so. I actually might look at the French language article and see about editing it. I wonder where they get their source? The Wikipedia page I linked to lists their source as Ethnologue, 2013. I imagine the people at Ethnologue know what they are doing. It would seem that the Congo does have millions of French speakers. However, almost none of them are "native" speakers. They may be fluent, but their first language is not French.
