Not just the UK. I live in the US, and we say throw up, not upchuck.

Upchuck isn't heard often, but it is slang (one of many) for vomit.

shouldn't pick-me-up work for inspirational and clean-up work for maintenance

I don't think throw up, pick-me-up or clean-up should be allowed as answers because they are not one word. Just my two cents.

"Throw up" isn't a word, kids. On the other hand, "throwup" IS a word, and it's a noun that means "vomit". So Quizmaster, how about accepting that one?

The running joke in elementary school was asking the question, "What's up, Chuck?" Perhaps it's only a regional colloquialism in the US, but I heard it plenty as a child.

Would "Up the river" work for jail? Uplift didn't work for uplifting. Is that a grammatical issue?

Technically the quiz is looking for a word not a phrase, so "throw up" wouldn't work by those rules.

Upchuck: first noted in the Dictionary of American Slang (1960), which also adds, "Considered a smart and sophisticated term c. 1935, esp. when applied to sickness that had been induced by over-drinking."
Haha. The word doesn't have quite the same connotation these days. :)
