And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that! - Is what Meatloaf should have said to whoever decided a werewolf theme was a good idea for the film clip...

Justin Bieber sells millions too .

I think the point Jonathan was making is that just because someone sells millions, that doesn't mean what he's doing is good. Erikthev suggested that the sales of Meatloaf's song mean the video is good.

I remember watching this episode of "Friends" with my girlfriend at the time - one where Ross and Rachel are fighting, and Ross asks her what she wants him to do, and Joey suggests that he drink this glass of cooking fat that Monica had in the refrigerator. And he comes *this* close to actually drinking it to prove his love. I looked over at my gf at that point and said, "I would do anything for love... but I won't drink fat."

Lady Gaga in the same group as great power ballads from the 70's & 80's?? What a tragedy...

Here I Go Again wasn't until 1987. That was my first concert :)

I thought so too, but according to wikipedia...

"Here I Go Again" is a #1 hit song recorded by Whitesnake. Originally released on their 1982 album, Saints & Sinners, the song was re-recorded for their eponymous 1987 album Whitesnake. "

There are several songs here that I would never consider a Power Ballad. Most notably Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time". Seriously?

that song is the definition of power ballad

21 songs from '74-'98 ... then 2011?! Gaga?! Wth?!

... and the year would preclude 'Natalie Merchant' from being the answer for 'Because the Night' ... plus, I think it was actually 10,000 Maniacs, right? Either way ...

Anybody else seriously addicted to this site?

I typed Don Williams and Waylon Jennings for Amanda before I realized the year listed was 1986. I keep forgetting there were two songs by that name. I heard Don Williams sing this in concert. Check it out online if you want to hear a beautiful, simple song.

(Everything I Do) I Do It for You was released in 1991, not 1988. Otherwise, fun quiz!

Most of these songs are not power ballads. Because the Night, We are the Champions? No.

How in the world is We Are the Champions not a power ballad? What weird, nebulous are you using for power ballad? You know that hammy lyrics about a woman are not a requirement, right?

Not that I'm complaining because I loved having a music quiz that featured older music but I guess I have a different definition of a power ballad. At best half would make the list based off mine. And the even then some of the artists have other well known songs that would better fit the definition like "Patience", "Never Say Goodbye", "Is This Love", "Tuesday's Gone", "Open Arms" etc.

No way "The Final Countdown" should be on here. Europe wrote power ballads (Carrie & Superstitious come to mind) but their hit isn't one of them.

Honorable mention to Goodbye to Love from The Carpenters. Probably the first power ballad, pairing Karen's lovely melancholy vocal with Tony Peluso 's powerful guitar. Definitely worthy of mention in this quiz.
