Alexandria is in Virginia. Was it considered part of DC in 1800? It's on the south side of the Potomac. And Georgetown? It's just a small neighborhood in Washington now. hmm... I kept trying to remember Northern Liberties and Southwark. I just took that biggest US cities by decade quiz again and knew they'd be on here... but I couldn't recall them.

The original tract of land selected for DC in 1792 included the colonial port city of Alexandria, VA and the newer smaller tobacco port of Georgetown, MD. The District was exactly 10 miles by 10 miles, square. In 1847 the part south of the river was retroceded to Virginia to eventually become Arlington County and Old Town Alexandria. On a map you can still see the perfect square that it used to be. Georgetown was eventually joined with Washington to form one city.

Agreed but shouldn't Portland be Portland, MA then? Since it was part of Mass. at the time.

Also, nominated! Great quiz.

Nice quiz but the type-in for Marblehead doesn't work.

Portland, ME should be listed as Portland, MA because it was under the ownership of Massachusetts at the time.
