This quiz should have been named "The longest normal names of countries" instead of "The longest OFFICIAL names of countries" then. This quiz maker is absolutely ridiculous and just tells all critics to "go pound sand" when the quiz is quite contradicting. What a joke.
When did the "A" in USA become optional or obsolete? Can we similarly contract United Arab Emirates to just United Arab, just because we can? If so, would be no less arbitrary of a decision.
Conversational contractions and actual names of countries are very different things. All sorts of shortened words and phrases exist in conversations because it's quicker and easier. I'm from Australian and nobody round here says Papua New Guinea in conversation it's always PNG. That doesn't mean the name of the country has changed, it's just a conversational language choice to say it faster. For the record, when I flew to Hawaii last year I told friends/family that I was going to the USA, because it is the actual name of the country and it's faster to say (three syllables) than either United States (four) or United States of America.(nine).
No one would say "I will fly to the United Arab Emirates" or to "the Federated States of Micronesia" either. It would always be to "the emirates" or "to Micronesia". The test is inconsistent as it stands.
If you make an analogy, at least get it right. "of America" is an adjective corresponding to the "Arab" in the UAE, not "Emirates," which corresponds to "States." So you could call the UAE the "United Emirates" or even just the "Emirates" because people do call it that!
Just couldn’t quite get my head round this one. Mental block. Then I saw the half of the answers I missed and wondered quite why I didn’t get them. Frustrating, as this should be fairly straight forward.
Jetpunk doesn't accept US as an abbreviation, it only accepts USA. The well-known, FULL name of this country is the United States of America. Call me a whiner all you want, you're wrong on this one, and many people on here seem to agree.
It's still wrong. US is never accepted on this site as an abbreviation, USA (standing for the FULL name of the country, United States of America) is. The accepted official long name of the country is United States of America. Quizmaster is wrong and inconsistent with this one.
What on earth is an "accepted official long name"? Accepted by whom? Yourself?
Type-ins have absolutely nothing to do with what the standard name on the site is. Almost no countries have their own (*English) official long name used in this quiz, so it certainly doesn't make sense to call not using that "inconsistent".
But probably the most important point is, does it really bother you people that much to type usa, have it not work, and then type uae? It's like two seconds of typing for a very obvious answer considering you're already thinking of "united".
the official name of Ivory Coast is Cote d'Ivore so i feel it is unfair to have Ivory Coast as the longest country name with an I because it doesn't start with one.
It's just autistic JetPunk users being so. It's annoying but I'm not sure what complaining about how a country's named on some trivia site accomplishes.
and I'm not sure what being ableist on some trivia site accomplishes, either. Either you're using "autistic" as an insult, in which case YOU can go pound sand (disrespectfully), or you're generalizing autism in a way that's very hurtful, in which case you can also go pound sand. Don't do that.
Honestly, I'd expect *many* autistic people to understand this better, as *some* just take stuff at face value (*checks CotW* oh, these are the official names on this site? OK. *has no further confusion*) Maybe I'm wrong but the people who don't seem to get this also seem to ignore the quite clear words on their screen
Ivory Coast is actually a commonly used name for the country though... but honestly if you think that's bad, you really ought to check out what's happened to East Timor and Cape Verde.
Which is the full and correct name seems to be missing.
Great quiz though. Makes you think!

And that is why El Salvador is known as "The Saviour" and Singapore as "Lion City" on this site.
