Fun fact to know and love: While the capital of Vermont is named after Montpellier, France and therefore seems like it should be pronounced all French & fancy-like – Mawn'-peel(i)-YAY – it’s actually just pronounced “Mont-PEELier”.

Impress your friends!

Just like Ver-say-els (Versailles) and Kay-ro (Cairo). We English speakers are excellent at butchering pronunciations of other languages.

Many of us in the Cairo, IL area pronounce it "Care'-oh" instead of Cay-ro. Nearby is New Madrid, pronounce Mad'-rid, not Muh-drid', and Hayti, pronounced Hay'-tie.

Missed Augusta, Frankfort, Helena, Jefferson City, and Concord... not great. But at least for once Annapolis was a right answer.

Interesting, all the data I saw shows the population at about 55,000 for Carson City, Nevada. The population in the 1960s would put them near the lowest on the list.
