Don't remember what it was that I was typing, but I got Dream of the Endless, which I never even heard of. And by the way, isn't Catwoman a villain?
reply

Catwoman isn't really a villian or a hero. She just kinda floats around in the grey area.

I got it with "Sandman" as in the Marvel villain.

It's referring to Sandman, the lord of dreams, from the series by Neil Gaiman

Don't feel too bad. Objectively, Captain America is a horrible character.

Dude not good I can't believe u Captain America is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

(69)
Captain America's original backstory: weakling wants to fight for the army. Takes steroids. Goes to Germany and punches out Hitler.
delete
Jun 17, 2013
(21)
Captain America SHOULD be included in this list if for no other reason than he is the only character on the list that physically represents the United States of America
delete
Apr 17, 2014
(69)
Superman fights for truth, justice, and the American way (or used to) and he's already #1- and also objectively not a very good character.
delete
Nov 24, 2014
(46)
If we're talking "objectively" here, then Spawn should easily be at #1. Just saying.
delete
Nov 25, 2014
(69)
Did that ever go anywhere interesting? I was a Spawn fan for a while. It was actually the only book that I ever really read regularly (I read all of The Tick and Pitt but they both released new issues so infrequently it's hard to consider someone who read even every one "regular"). But... by around issue 50 or so it just felt like it wasn't going anywhere and I lost interest. I think 51 was the last one I bought. That was of course many years ago. Would be hard to imagine that he could have kept the story going this long if he was straining already by the time I left.

@darkseraphim21 To be fair, it does say "heroes", not "superheroes", so it makes perfect sense.

Agreed! I tried "girl" and "woman." I know QM took this list from another source - but that source has issues.

she's invisible. Her superpower is to be a metaphor for women in comics in general, and on IGN's lists especially.

:) Also note that everyone on the Avengers, even Nick Fury and f'ing Hawkeye (there are two characters on the list that are just a ripoff of Robin Hood) make the list, but no Black Widow.

On the other hand... Beast, Angel, and Iceman got snubbed while Jean Grey is on, and Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee, Gambit etc are nowhere to be seen while Storm and Kitty Pryde made the list. Maybe the X books just have better female characters.

May 31, 2012
(56)
Uuh when people started buying lots of comics back in the 40s?
reply

Jan 24, 2013
(69)
More like the 1960s. The 40s-50s era, the "Golden Age," was dominated almost entirely by Superman and Batman, with only a small handful of other superheroes selling enough books to justify their continued existence. It wasn't really until the 1960s that comics became something not "just for kids," and superhero comics of all sorts (not just Superman) began outselling other comics like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Archie.

I think you're probably right. I remember reading my older brothers' comic books in the 1950s and the only ones I remember were Archie, Donald Duck, and Casper the Friendly Ghost. (Although I do remember them occasionally hiding one and refusing to let me see it - hmmm.)

I was very pleased that Rick Grimes made the list. I'll admit I've never read the Green Lantern comments, but why was he up so high on the list? His weakness is an entire color.
reply
delete
Nov 20, 2012
(21)
Actually he doesn't have that weakness anymore and he may be so high on the list because his color represents "willpower" which is what every hero needs to fight evil

(69)
yeah. Seems like this list was a) trying to be diverse and b) giving points for seniority or for headlining a book. Some of these characters are just flat out lame, but have name recognition or have been around for a while or they have their own books. There are tons of characters in the X-verse more interesting than Captain Marvel. Those you mentioned, plus Nightcrawler, Gambit, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Northstar, Angel, just to name a few...

probably should add Kitty Pryde as a type-in for Shadowcat. And maybe Marvel Girl as a type-in for Jean Grey. Though there are two other characters that have used that alias besides her, she was the original.

Glad Constantine is here. I am a huge fan of the comic and still have a large collection. It's a shame the movie was so bad. Keanu Reeves was miscast as Constantine. It should have been someone like Tim Roth or Gary Oldman. Good to see Judge Dredd is here too. Was a huge 2000AD fan years ago and it is a shame that some of the other 2000AD characters such as Rogue Trooper and Slaine are not on this list. Dredd was another character that suffered in the hands of Hollywood, though the second one was at least better than the that god awful train wreck with Stallone.

And if only Americans are here, what about the Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse?
