You miss Slovenia and Croatia. Both belonged to France under Napoleon and were called Illyrian Provinces. They also have portions of present-day Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.

Moreover, South Sudan must figure in the list after the Fashoda incident in 1898.

Thanks. I checked the Illyrian Provinces and included Slovenia and Croatia. I'm not sure how I missed it. A simple map check should've told me. The Fashoda incident wasn't a military incident -- they turned back when told to by the British. The start of the modern French military reputation I suppose.

(I deleted a comment recommending South Sudan/ Fashoda). But don't be flippant about the French military and their historical reputation, please - I've visited the cemetery at Verdun and there are 162,000 people lying there who would beg to differ.

Is it my imagination or are the French particularly belligerent?
