Countries whose largest island is at least 1,000 km2
For each country you are shown the number of islands large at least 1,000 km2. Answers are sorted by number of islands and then alphabetically. You are shown hints for countries with just one island.
Aside from Slovakia, the second biggest surprise for me is that Chile has more than the Philippines. I know they have a lot of islands in the south, but I didn't realize they were that big. Also, I wonder how many Antarctica would have if it counted as a country.
Thanks for spotting that - if you then open the Hiiumaa page it says its area is 989 km2; Sodertorn seems an ambiguous case ("Södertörn is a roughly triangular peninsula[1] and artificial island[2] in eastern Södermanland, Sweden"). So I don't really know whether they should be counted or not?
Looks like the area listed for Hiiumaa is the area of the county, which also includes several other islands.
The Statistics Sweden classified Södertörn as and island in 2014. They say, google-translated to english:
"Why is Södertörn-Nacka counted as an island?
With regard to the Södertörn-Nacka area, it has long been discussed whether the area is an island or not, so the question is not new at all. In previous publications of Sweden's islands, many have wondered why Nacka-Södertörn is NOT counted as an island. Because the Södertälje canal is counted as surface-formed water, Södertörn-Nacka is unequivocally an island, surrounded by the Södertälje canal, Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. If you want to harden it, Södertörn-Nacka was probably an island already with the previous definition, because historically there has been water in the form of sound or similar on the site."
