Nice quizzes! But I have to object at the characterization of recorders as a mere children's instrument. Recorders have a long and noble history, and can boast of some serious repertoire. As an alternative clue, how about, to quote Wikipedia, "flute with whistle mouthpiece."
Very true! I didn't actually mean to imply any sense of 'mere' in the clue. I play classical music for a living and work with brilliant recorder players from time to time - Vivaldi concertos, Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, cantatas etc - so I know very well that the recorder played at professional levels has just as much standing as any instrument. But...it is commonly played (ad nauseum) by kids as a simple beginner's instrument, too, so the clue works. Thanks for taking the whole series!
Thanks for this great series, Kiwirage, I've really enjoyed it.
Just a tiny quibble - an oboe or bassoon doesn't really have two reeds, but a double reed; they come as a single entity when you buy them. Not that I ever have, as I'm a clarinettist, so just singles for me!
You could argue that Elvis's musical genre was not rock; it's more accurate to say that it was rock and roll (or rockabilly). Rock music arose in the mid-60s from rock and roll, but they aren't the same thing. Of course, this is nitpicky and I'm not trying to advocate a change to this quiz; I just wanted to point this out.
