The Tree of Ténéré was once considered to be the most remote tree in the world. Located in the middle of the Sahara desert in Niger, it was hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest other tree. Somehow, a drunk truck driver managed to hit it and knock it down in 1973.

If you see a platypus, give it space. Male platypuses have a venom-delivering spur on their hind legs. Though not lethal to humans, its effects have been described as "worse than being struck by shrapnel". Painful in itself, the venom also amplifies the body's ability to feel pain from other causes for weeks or months into the future.

In September 2023, the speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, Anthony Rota, resigned after a scandal in which he honored a Waffen-SS veteran in the house. The longest serving member of the house was Louis Plamondon of the Bloc Québecois, meaning he became interim speaker until the speaker election concluded. Since Bloc Québecois is a separatist party, this means Canada technically had an interim speaker from a party which rejected the idea of being part of Canada.

The Potsdam Giants were a Prussian regiment of soldiers created and appointed by King Frederick William I. These soldiers were all at least 6’ 2”. Frederick had a strange obsession with tall soldiers, admitting that “the most beautiful girl or woman in the world would be a matter of indifference to me, but tall soldiers—they are my weakness.” These soldiers were paid depending on how tall they were, and were often given preferential treatment over other soldiers. However, most of the “long fellows” were forcibly recruited, and many were unhappy with their positions as a result. Frederick would even sometimes buy tall parents’ babies in the hope of a tall child.

Weirdo.

Bellwether counties are counties which side with the winning presidential candidate. Clallam County, Washington has done so since 1980 with no errors. Blaine County, Montana has sided with the winning US presidential candidate since 1916 except for 1988.

…the Electoral College sucks…
+2
Level 69
Jun 8, 2024
This has nothing to do with the electoral college… ?
+3
Level 18
Jun 8, 2024
It’s sort of related. There are other more democratic methods [than the Electoral College] of either apportioning electoral votes (the states have always had the power to literally choose however they want to do this—they could pick names out of a hat if they wanted to) or just voting in general. Electoral votes could be awarded by congressional district (this system is only used in Maine and Nebraska) or even by county (I’ve never heard of a system that would somehow appoint votes by how counties voted, but I’m sure someone could devise something). Other methods of voting, such as Ranked Choice Voting (this is often considered one of the most fair and democratic methods of voting) could change bellwether counties’ importance in elections.

If any of you have an interest in learning more about the American voting system and how it can be made more democratic, you should check out FairVote.com. They have a lot more info than I do haha

Saving animals from extinction can make other animals go extinct. An example of this is the Iberian lynx louse. The louse lived in the Iberian lynx and went extinct when all remaining Iberian lynxes were taken into captivity and deloused to assist its survival, causing the extinction of the louse.

A sort of equivalent in India: Charan Singh was the only prime minister who never proved their support from the majority of parliament. He was promised support from Indira Gandhi's Congress party with some conditions, but he refused the condition of dropping charges against Indira and Sanjay Gandhi. Congress (I) withdrew their support just before he was to face parliament. He resigned after 23 days in July-August 1979 but remained a caretaker until the next election in January 1980.

After World War II, there was a huge housing shortage when all the vets returned home and had nowhere to live. So the government found some empty space and in a matter of months built Quonset huts for six thousand people, all for a total cost of what in today's dollars would be less than eighteen million. Back to today. In the bond measure LA passed in 2016 to build housing for the homeless, each unit was projected to cost $140,000. And after LA actually started building these apartments, the cost for each unit rose to $531,000. “How is that possible?” you may ask. Do they each come with a shark tank and an infinity pool? No, they don’t.

They do still make those Quonset huts, and one today would cost about eight grand. But it's hard to skim money off eight grand. But $531,000? Definitely. About 40 percent of that cost goes to something the city calls "soft costs": middle-men, inspectors, contractors, lawyers, lobbyists and consultants.

Can people just do their freaking jobs?
