The caveat about nitpickers is nonsensical seeing as the title emphasizes states with exactly one team. New Jersey is a United States state with exactly 3 major pro sports teams.
Agreed, someone2018. It's not "nitpicking" to say that New Jersey has 3 pro teams. I live in NJ and missed NJ because I instantaneously ruled the Jets/Giants/Devils out. In 1 minute, you have to blow through the leagues looking for one that has that immediate feel of uniqueness. Portland...BAM!....Oklahoma City...BAM!
If you want to do a quiz for states that have only 1 team NAMED for them, then probably best to entitle the quiz thusly.
this is how it works for ones who don't understand ... if a team is named a geographical region and not a state, then the official state location defaults to where the team plays. Two NFL examples are the patriots and panthers. Panthers are North Carolina and patriots are Massachusetts. However, for the giants and jets they are the NEW YORK football team in the name in the title so it is still a New York franchise. If we were to not apply this rule then technically Maryland would have two teams even though dc has one and Baltimore has one.
But still, if based solely on the team name, then an argument could be made that Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire all have a team...
...no, it isn't. They're called the New York Jets and the New York Giants. Are they called the Illinois Fighting Irish? No? Then it's not the same thing.
I disagree with both of you. Illinois Fighting Irish thing is a bad one since the team is nowhere close to Illinois and for Giants and Jets, they're the only one in the whole business keeping the New York name for obvious business reasons while operating in a different state. They just simply do not operate in New York and are not New York teams as far as states go.
The Devils are not calling themselves the New York Devils. The Nets did change their name upon moving to New Jersey after the merger.
Bills kind of also get a pass for not operating in their citiy anymore, but on the other side, Cardinals are not calling themselves the Phoenix Cardinals and Warriors did also change their name upon moving to Oakland.
I couldn't figure out why I could only get one correct - Oklahoma. I was typing cities and assumed you accepted Oklahoma for that one instead of having to add city to the name. Sigh.
