Did you know: back in the territory days of pro wrestling, most territories had their own version of the NWA United States Championship? In fact, there's at least twelve commonly known versions of that belt that were in existence at one time or another since 1953. However, only one lineage, or version, can trace its roots through the NWA, WCW, and WWE, that's the version started in Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic territory in 1975. This version became known as the undisputed United States championship in 1981, became the WCW United States Championship in 1991, lasted through that company's existence, and was briefly defended in WWE up until 2001. In 2003, it was revived, with its lineage intact, and is still defended today as a secondary championship, alternating between the Raw and SmackDown! brands over the years.
