Both the Republican and Democratic parties have received 40%-60% of the popular vote in nearly every Presidential election since 1860.

I love the time in 1912 when Teddy Roosevelt became the only third party candidate to beat a major party candidate :)

And in the process handing the election to Wilson, who would have had little chance had Roosevelt stayed out of the race.

Which we already have in New Zealand for several mayoral contests (except we call it STV, Single Transferable Vote). The Australians also use it, to elect MPs to their national parliament.
