Japan has an ageing population, this is the most obvious reason why it is declining. Russia lost all the people who were part of the USSR but not in Russia and I suspect people might be relocating for family reasons etc.

The dropoff in the early 1990s is not precipitous enough to account for the former USSR populations, which makes me believe that this is probably based on the population of Russia proper.

Since they're both falling now what is the goal of this battle? To stay high by attracting more immigrants? Or first to reach zero population wins?

I guess the drop after 1945 is because of WW2. That's incredible, maybe if WW2 didn't happen, Russia would have 200 million people!

What's with the sudden increase in population between 2010 and 2015 of ~4 million in Russia?

I think there is a glitch or something for Russia between 1940 and 1946? I can't see the line...
