Disagree, even though it tells us where they went to, the sentence is phrased more like they are leaving somewhere (emigrating) rather than arriving somewhere (immigrating).

Just "migrated" would be fine to stop any further pedantry!

No you had it correct the first time with emigrated. The perspective of the subject in the sentence (people born in Ireland) is the important part and their action was to leave their country (emigrate). From the perspective of someone already in the USA, that would represent immigration to your country, but you are not the subject of the sentence!

Number 179: Even though only six deaths were recorded, the fire probably killed many more. But nobody really cared about poor people and press buildings have been burned down so that nobody could report properly.

I think #179 is highly controversial. Many people think that nearly all the deaths were unrecorded and think the actual estimates are like one hundred deaths.
