During Prohibition in the United States, criminals bought industrial alcohol and repurposed it for human consumption. To prevent this, the government encouraged companies to add poisonous methanol (wood alcohol) to industrial alcohol. This didn't completely stop people from drinking it. It did, however, kill many of the people who did. As many as 10,000 people may have died as a result.
If you want to know you've been living in a lie, also "macaroni" should be plural.
But, as it is *not* strictly a loan word, it can also be singular.
That is because the italian word is "maccheroni" (singular "maccherone").
In general, pasta shapes are not uncountable like "milk" or "bread". But the word "pasta" itself is!
That's a bizarre and troubling perspective.
