One thing a person cannot do, no matter how rigorous his analysis or heroic his imagination, is to draw up a list of things that would never occur to him.

If you believe in freedom of speech, you believe in freedom of speech for views you don't like. Goebbels was in favor of freedom of speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you're in favor of freedom of speech, that means you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise.

It is not too much to expect that our children will enjoy in their homes electrical energy too cheap to meter.

"A user quotes page is a bad idea, because, well, people will brainstorm 'brilliant' quotes, instead of letting them come naturally. That's not how quotes are made! I reckon the whole section would just be misattributions and r/im14andthisisdeep fodder."
- Me, occasionally misattributed to Julius Caesar.
i've got to disagree with the first one (number 101) - there are plenty of things i can list that would never have occurred to me, that other people have done. i would say on a regular basis when reading books, listening to music or learning about science i come across a choice someone made and i think to myself "Wow, i would just never have thought of something like that. amazing."
i'm pretty sure it means to just sit there and think of things you would never think of - for example, say your teacher gave you this assignment : take five minutes, and write a list of as many things that you would never think of as you can.
Point being that, if a thought does occur to you, you wouldn't be able to write it on the list, given it just occurred to you, and that disqualifies it. The idea of writing a list of ideas that would never occur to oneself is contradictory, since writing said list would require thinking of unthinkable ideas.
“In Heaven, a minute is the difference between one brilliant sentence and another. In Hell it’s the difference between one brilliant sentence and a dead man.”
