Gaul is not the Roman name for France - that would be Gallia. Gaul is a word that has the same meaning but a distinct etymology.

wrong, it was the Deutsche Mark. You are probably confusing with a Reichsmark, but that is the currency before D-Mark.

I'm definitely not confusing it with Reichsmark. I grew up in West Germany and we called it D-mark or Deutschmark where I lived. Wikipedia wisdom of today notwithstanding.

The official name was Deutsche Mark. Deutschmark was an inofficial, colloquial name commonly used both in some parts of Germany as well as internationally.
