Got 100% of this, but couldn't seal the deal on the national anthem. Really like this quiz format.

I got 100%, but it took me a second to figure out the fancy-pants AMERICA columns. I thought each word had to start with the letter above that column. Apparently not. :)

The song was adopted during the Red Scare in America, the height of 1950s patriotism. It was a direct response to Communism to try and get "God" into as much American stuff as possible (that's when "under God" was added to the Pledge of Alleigance and "In God We Trust" was added to our money.)

nothing wrong with communism actually...just the way it has been implemented for the past century makes it seem bad...which in turn, isn't real communism

Nonsense. Communism is, by its own terms, the DICTATORSHIP of the proletariat. Dictatorship is bad. So is an ideology in which the individual has no value, where anyone may be sacrificed for the purported good of society, or even just one class.

The words to the song are on a plaque at the top of Pike's Peak. I believe the woman who wrote the poem was inspired by the view. The song is much more inspiring when read from that spot.

I've had to sing this so many times but funnily enough, have never known the lyrics, just the general sounds of the words and the tune. I tried all different combinations of "ample fields of green" and "amble seas of gray" for "amber waves of grain". I also thought "crown" was "bound". I feel kind of stupid.

Sad comment that we do not celebrate the music that celebrates the beauty, wonder, majesty, and glory of this grand country. Used to be that all school children learned AND PERFORMED a number of patriotic songs. No matter where one traveled, people could gather and sing the same songs, typically at Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day picnics. Having the same musical connections to the country helped engender that feeling that "We are ALL Americans!" As I near my 60s, I find myself wondering "What happened to that?" I feel sorry for those youths who will never have the opportunity to grow up with that deep sense of belonging. It was comforting.

However, I do feel obliged to point out that there are more verses to the song. I could never get the lyrics to those but they do exist: http://www.scoutsongs.com/lyrics/americathebeautiful.html

Correction: should be 'crowned thy good' to be grammatically consistent with 'shed His grace'.

I read these comments, including the politically charged ones. I'm a commie liberal atheist and firm believer in the First Amendment. I don't like how 'God Bless America' seems to be sung at more and more public events. However, I love 'America the Beautiful' because of its melody and lyrics. I'm actually OK with 'God shed his grace on thee' in the lyrics. Ray Charles's version has brought me to tears. I wish it would replace the Star-Spangled Banner as our national anthem.

I don't understand this meme. What's wrong with the Star-Spangled Banner? I think the people who dislike the song don't fully appreciate the historical context or meaning behind it. Fine song and much better than most national anthems out there.
