Also accept "Conan Doyle"? Everyone I know thinks his surname was that two-word version, and the website of his literary estate also treats it as such. However, I just checked wikipedia (where a search on Arthur Doyle brings up some other guy) and officially Conan was his middle name, even though his wife became Jean Conan Doyle when she married him, and he is referred to, when leaving off the Arthur, as simply Conan Doyle.

I just went round the same loop. We could be pedantic and insist on Doyle, but certainly he's widely referred to as Conan Doyle, and I think it would be reasonable to allow that as the answer - if you type that in, you've clearly solved the question and are referring to the right guy.

On the other hand, if Conan Doyle was the correct answer, then there would be two lines to fill out - wouldn't there?
