Maybe this isn't as prevelant in the USA as it is in the UK if people aren't aware of it? It's a big thing over here, in fact my grandparents just celebrated their Diamond anniversary (60th) this month. The smaller anniversaries aren't so well known but I've always known the big ones referred to as Silver, Gold, Ruby, Diamond etc. anniversaries, and everyone knew what I meant when I said I was going to a Diamond anniversary party.

I went with Plastic and Meat as well. Kinda bummed that Silk is included as Linen/Silk and then once more on its own. Didn't even think of repeating it!

Now.. rope anniversary is something that sounds interesting...

I enjoyed this quiz, but there is a modernized list, too, which includes things such as clocks, furs, appliances, jewelry, etc. Also, since ivory is no longer ethical to buy, year 14 is often seen as "animals". So KellyGeoGirl, can you wait 14 years for your puppy?
+1
Level 37
Sep 11, 2014
As if the pet industry were ethical. And furs? Holy Hypocrites, Batman. There is plenty of antique ivory out there. And there is hippo and walrus ivory as well. Those animals aren't threatened.

I was thinking of elephant ivory, but I wouldn't know the difference among all the types so I'll stick with animals on anniversary 14. I'm a farm girl, so for me a nice gift would have been a young heifer or gilt.
+3
Level 78
Aug 4, 2017
Apples and oranges. The pet industry may have its shortcomings, but it's miles away from the savagery and cruelty of the ivory traders. And by the way, sadly both hippos and walruses are endangered species too.

Giving ivory as a present is not a sign of love. Is a sign of idiocy.

I'm saddened by the inclusion of ivory on the list. Who can be so deranged as to give an ivory item as a present? Completely sick.
+6
Level 69
Aug 4, 2017
Firstly, this list was clearly created some time ago - according to wiki, in Medieval Germany. At that time, one might postulate that the awareness and animal rights activism wasn't a 'thing'. Secondly, shame on you for being a keyboard warrior on Ivory, but being totally fine with Leather, Silk, Pearl and Coral. 'Completely sick'.
