The first thing that I put down was "scratchy as a fiddle". That actually makes more sense than the actual answer.

I always heard flat as a pancake, sharp as a tack. My dad used to tell me, "You're sharp as a tack, that's why we call you flat head."

i was gonna guess because they look like they have wide smiles but i looked it up. apparently it refers to them being unreachable in high tide.

"Happy as a clam" is a shortened form of the original phrase, which is "happy as a clam at high tide."

Dead as a dodo is the only one I never heard. Though dead as a "doornail" was something I grew up with.

I looked it up, and apparently it originated in the American south, some believe in Texas. The original meaning of cute was "acute" so it maybe makes more sense that way. The meaning of the word cute started changing from sharp to adorable around the late 1800s. https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/as-cute-as-a-bugs-ear.html

Midwest US here - I've used "cute as a bug's ear", as well as "cute as a button." But I like odd phrases and words, so I may be the exception.

Dumb as an ox is definitely a saying. Maybe accept it as an alternate?

I agree with everyone saying they've heard 'dead as a doornail' and 'cute as a button' over 'dead as a Dodo' and 'cute as a bug's ear'
