It's named after the town founder - Robert Towns. I live in Townsville. (It's a poor, poor excuse for a town to be honest)

I liked it there a lot (much more than Cairns), but that was also partially due to the great people at the hostel I stayed at :)

Good call! I think the Powerpuff Girl makers thought they were making up a name. I mean Townsville basically means townvillage... which is just silly.

What is the correct way to pronounce Queanbeyan?

Jul 27, 2014
It's pronounced Quuen-be-yan. Also Queanbeyan is part of Canberra even though it's in NSW.

I come from Canberra and was born in Queanbeyan so it's alright. Also, I meant Queen-be-yan not Quuen-be-yan. I also agree with counting Queanbeyan as not part of Canberra. It's like counting Gosford as part of Sydney.

Since the time I did the quiz, I have done some research about Australian cities, and I have to say that I did not expect that their urban areas were so HUUUUUGE in superficy. The Sydney one is about half the size of Belgium. So no wonder cities like Central Coast does not belong in that quiz, it must have been "swallowed" by the urban area of Sydney!

+1
level 70
Mar 19, 2018
You can see Queensland's dispersed population compared to the capital-metro focused populations of the other states and territories. Eight of these are in Queensland, compared to six in New South Wales. And that's only if you count Gold Coast-Tweed and Canberra-Queanbeyan towards NSW, though in each case the NSW portion wouldn't make the list. And whilst Albury is a majority of the population of Albury-Wodonga, it would be smaller than Rocky with the Victorian population taken away. So really only three unambiguous NSW entries. Victoria manages 5 (including the aforementioned Albury-Wodonga) and Tassie scores 2. Everyone else can only manage 1 entry.
