Only thirty-one percent can guess Gordon Lightfoot but fifty-eight percent can guess Nickelback? THIS is what's wrong with society.

Not a fan of either one (thought I got both right on the quiz). This is not indicative of musical taste, but merely a bias for more recent musical acts. Most people will always recognize the stuff that's current and the stuff from when they were young before they recognize anything older than them.

Maybe you should accept the Members of Nickleback as well (Chad Kruger etc..)

lol you wouldn't even get that right either, since you can't seem to spell his name properly.

What's the problem with Nickelback? Seen them live last month and they were awesome. The real tragedy here is that 67% know who Justin Bieber is. I'd rather not.

The only problem with Nickelback is that they are terrible and a blight on humankind. I guess that's two problems, actually.

I would just like to point out that the only reason I got Beiber was because I was typing in all the Candaian acts I could think of at the end. I still have not consciously heard any of his "music"

How does someone criticize an artist's music if they've never heard it? I understand disliking it because it's overplayed or even just because you don't like the way it sounds, but if you claim to not have heard any of his music (which I doubt is true) then there's nothing to judge.

The Band was 80% Canadian. Levon Helm was from Marvell, AR. My bro-in-law had the privilege of playing onstage with him once when he came back to AR for "Levon Helm Day" in Marvell. My BIL said Levon was a super great guy.

I believe "Canadian content" laws for our radio/television stations make a lot of artists Canada-famous and not world-famous.

Based on airplay, I was surprised to not see:

Jann Arden

Amanda Marshall

K-OS

Moist

City and Colour

Diana Krall

Serena Ryder

Michael Buble

Just to name a few. Again, based on radio airplay rather than personal taste. :)

It's kind of funny how so many extra-American countries have laws about using locally produced music/television/films etc. Like they acknowledge that the stuff they produce just isn't good enough that anyone would want to listen to it unless it was required by law. :)

Anyway, Michael Buble is fairly famous I think. The rest of the people you mention I've never heard of before.

Since I live in Canada, I am familiar with all the names listed. If I were to suggest listening, I would say give Diana Krall a listen, as well as Serena Ryder. I actually like all the acts listed, but as education, I might suggest listening to those two first.

There's not a lot of correlation between fame and talent in American music either.

Good lord.. it's hard to find a quiz where kalbahamut isn't adding his American two bits. As of 2021 the top song in the US has been by a Canadian artist 3 of the last 5 years, so apparently Canadian music is good enough for you Yanks. The reason countries have these rules is to preserve their cultures. Otherwise, the English-speaking world would be boring and dominated by "American culture". Nobody wants that.

Joni Mitchell and Neil Young may have been from Canada but their music, lyrics, and perspective are very much Southern California. They came to America to make it and they were part of the Laurel Canyon scene that also included David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, and many others.

Cohen is by far the most important contributor to the musical canon in this list. So disappointed more people don't know him. But everyone knows his work. He wrote "Hallelujah" and "Suzanne."

Include Halleluiah for Cohen and that percentage goes from 20 to 80.

Nickelback is a good rock band. Nothing complicated. Just good ole rock.

Paul Anka, the Weeknd, Nelly Furtado, K.D Lang, Deadmaus, Anne Murray, Michael Buble, ..... the list goes on.
