Agreed on the South American one, and the first one on the bottom row threw me totally, but I'm a Brit, it may be easier for people from that country. The Japanese one I managed to work out, somehow.
Been to 9 of these places. Attended Easter Mass at Notre Dame and the Vatican. Circumabulated the Kabaa. Went inside the Dome of the Rock and saw the rock. You should have put in a temple from India, Myanmar, Thailand or Cambodia. Lots to choose from. There are some impressive mosques in the UAE and Iraq, too. A bit Eurocentric.
I've been to four, but I've hit every one in cities I've actually been to. I was also a little surprised not to see anything from the Buddhist/Hindu sphere of the world. Spent much of my remaining time randomly guessing cities in India and SE Asia (though, in retrospect, all the ones I hadn't gotten by that point had either fairly obvious Christian symbols or Western architecture).
In Saudi Arabia there are police checkpoints at regular intervals on every highway. On the roads leading to Mecca and Medina there are many of them close together. They stop every car and check your ID. IDs and visas issued by Saudi Arabia have your religion printed on them. You can also go to one of the many Islamic centers in the country and convert to Islam; they will give you a laminate stating that you have spoken the shahada.
In Jerusalem there are armed guards outside the entrance to the Temple Mount and also in front of the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque. They will ask you to recite the Al-Fatiha from memory (the first chapter of the Quran). But if you tell them that you are a stupid American who just recently converted and is struggling to learn Arabic, they might let you in with some documentation of your conversion.
Jewish Israelis can go up on the Temple Mount only on specially-arranged guided tours. Prayer of any kind is still absolutely forbidden though, and the police will drag you away if you try.
There are plenty of fanatics who record themselves getting arrested for praying up there, then post the videos to push their agenda.
I still find it strange to see some of these colored white. I think of most of the European ones looking like the one in Cologne, even though it's been years since they were cleaned.
Great quiz! I do think that there should be at least one city in
Africa and in South Asia, maybe in an edition with all different cities from this one? Also if you are referring to Hagia Sophia as the "former place of worship" that is now a museum that is no longer correct since it has since gone back to being a mosque. I am not an expert on all of these locations so that caveat may apply to another one of these sites but I thought I should mention that.
Very Eurocentric or Italy-centric quiz. Why the South and Southeast Asia and Africa have been excluded from this quiz? Those regions have far more places of worship and their people are more religious. You could have included at least one place of worship of Hinduism and Sikhism each.
Golden Temple would have been especially nice. It seems like a beautiful place and it's very recognizable. I don't know about everyone else, but I would have had a less difficult time with it than the ones in SLC and Brasilia.
Fushimi Inari-taisha! That place is absolutely beautiful! I did the hike up to the top of Mt. Inari, it was so gorgeous to walk through all of those torii gates and seeing all the shrines and statues. Definitely worth a trip if you're in Japan!
Could really use more recent photos of the Mormon Temple and La Sagrada Familia. La Sagrada Familia is hard to recognize from that old photo based on what it looks like now with all the progress in construction.
