As a Lord of the Rings fan, I am pleasantly surprised to find that there is a city in New Zealand that is so close to "Dunedain"

Dunedin NZ has 120,000 people, Dunedin USA has 35,000. They were both named after Edinburgh, whose name in Scots Celtic is Dùn Èideann

You're right about it looking odd. The city is in Xinjiang and the name is probably derived from the Turkic language spoken in the region.

It's Uighur, which is related to Turkish and Kazakh. All the Chinese languages are from another language family. It doesn't sound Chinese, yes, but now you know there's a town like that. :)

That's because it's in Xinjiang, in the far northwest of China. It's a Muslim city, populated by Uyghurs, though there's been a huge effort by the government to move more Han Chinese into the city. In Mandarin it is called 乌鲁木齐, "wu lu mu qi". It's far closer to the -stans (1000 km to Bishkek, 1500 km to Tashkent and Astana, 1700 km to Dushanbe or Islamabad, 1900 km to Kabul) than it is to Beijing (2400 km).

Europeans are learning more and more about Libyan geography because there's a civil war there, which leads to hundreds of thousands of refugees migrating through Libya to Europe. The crisis has taken insane levels.
