I've never heard 'distance' used in that phrase - only 'absence' (and, in response to an earlier comment - I'm from the UK so I don't think it's a UK/US thing).
If you google "makes the world go round", LOVE is what comes up, first and often It is what I've always heard. There is also a song by The Stylistics, People Make the World Go Round. I never heard the expression about money. It doesn't show up in the first two pages of the google search. Even Dead Kennedys song, Kinky Sex Makes the World Go Round shows up before money.
