This must be like the millionth time we Spanish-speaking quizzers have said things in this tone: Spanish surnaming doesn't work the same way as English's. We have two surnames, and many people use both, like García Márquez, due to having a rather common first surname (like García).
Please (very much please), when in doubt about a Spanish-speaking famous, check in Wikipedia how their full name works.
Typically the first surname is taken from the person's father and the second from the person's mother. In the Philippines they sometimes end up with more than two.
I've only ever seen it referred to by the Spanish version of the name in any histories I've read, but I figure it doesn't Great or Greater being allowed wouldn't hurt.
I tried Great and Greater before realising it would be in Spanish. You can never be sure with Jetpunk, because 'it's a quiz conducted in English...." etc.
i think its like costa rica or puerto rico. You would never say rich coast or rich port. It just HAS to be in Spanish. (Sorry that cote d'Ivoire (I can't put accents) doesn't get the same respect though)
I visited Colombia for the first time two years ago. Probably my all-time favourite country. Incredibly beautiful and diverse and the people are very hospitable and welcoming whilst also knowing how to have fun (there is music everywhere you go in Colombia, and its produced an incredibly wide array of distinct genres). But yeah, above all it was the diversity of landscapes that really amazed me. In a country smaller than my home state, you can visit Amazonian rainforest, misty moorlands, glaciated peaks, white sand Caribbean beaches fringed by monkey-filled jungle, and the bare and sun-baked deserts of La Guajira - not to mention the beautiful cities, particularly Bogota around La Candelaria and Cartagena, the Caribbean fortress city.
hi, i'm Colombian. the first thing: true, in the pacific region (specially in Chocó) rains A LOT, there are towns in which rains everyday. the second thing: also true, sadly. our rate is not as high as some central american countries but violence in our country has been decreasing, but there's always :(
The whole time I was in Colombia I never felt in danger. I stayed away from areas where the ELN and other groups were active, obviously, but I think everyone should visit this amazing country.
lots of violence. Mostly inter gang violence so as long as you don't go into their battle grounds (Aka dodgy neighbourhoods), you do not join one or you don't try to fight against them and be the hero then you'll be fine
Escobar was evil. His cartels caused such violence in the 80s that Colombia still to this day has the most internally displaced people and we still have Colombians and Venezuelans fleeing to and from both countries due to the crises. Escobar caused the death of teens in the streets. mothers mourn to this day with empty beds because Escobar decided he wanted to make quick cash. He was despicable and basically nobody in Colombia will agree with you
So long as no quiz about the UK ever features a question about Jack the Ripper, no quiz about the US ever features a question about Al Capone, etc., then I would say sure, eliminate all Escobar-related questions from the Colombia quizzes. But, so long as residents of other nations have to answer trivia questions about their legendary villains, I don't see why Colombia should be made a special exception.
Frankly, I have never heard of Gran Colombia until now, but I actually guessed it right. For some reason my train of thought led me to "Greater Colombia" or something and when that didn't work I just tried the Spanish word. Quite happy with myself!
I like this quiz, but doesn't it have fewer questions than other ones in this series? If you need to add more questions, Quizmaster, I would suggest something related to the FARC conflict.
It's like that its technically in El Valle de Cauca but NOBODY says it. It's too long and you use a simplified version. Nobody in the UK actually says. Hi I have a passport of Great Britain the British isles and Northern Ireland
