What's the deal with Ukraine? I remember seeing them on the "poorest countries per capita" quiz earlier today and now apparently they're bleeding refugees? I always thought they were a semi-prosperous eastern European country, similar to the Baltic states, Russia or Romania. Apparently this isn't the case

They are fighting a civil war against Russian backed insurgents. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Donbass

Wow I didn't realize it was this serious; news stories usually mention it in passing, so I figured it was more of a civil unrest or very minor conflict.

Almost 1.5 million internally displaced and nearly 1 million fled the country though...

It's a low intensity war in one part of the country (though still war), and most of the country is peaceful and perfectly fine to visit / live, apart from economic troubles brought about by the war and reduced trade with Russia. That's why it's not such a big everday news like Syria, Iraq, Yemen, or e.g. Bosnia in the past.

By "others" do you mean the Russians sent to Ukraine by Stalin after he wiped out many of the native Ukrainians (some estimates up to 12 million) by starvation in 1932 and 33? That Uncle Joe was such a nice guy and such a great ally in WWII. Just goes to show how much you are willing to overlook when the outcome will be better for you if you just ignore a few little things.

How does Yemen not make the list? Are refugees not being allowed to leave?

well they are not allowed in to Saudi Arabia. Not sure what Oman's position is but given the terrain and climate it's not really easy to get to Oman. I was wondering why Libya missed the cut.

According to something I read more recently there are actually a large number of refugees in Saudi Arabia now but I think the majority came from Syria.

The numbers are based off 2014. Most of the really bad stuff didn't really start until 2014 if my memory is correct. Imagine a list from 2017 would haven them.

It struck me that Colombia is on this list... A more recent list would include Venezuela for sure, as 600,000 Venezuelans have fled to Colombia and many more have fled to other neighboring countries. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/venezuela/article204753119.html

I was surprised that Bangladesh was not accepted but I guess they are not considered to be refugees either? Interesting data though, Colombia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam surprised me, too

Same here. Why are people fleeing Vietnam, and where are they going? Laos?

Same here too. I was pretty shocked to see China, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Where do the Chinese flee to ? And where do the Sri Lankans go ? It's an Island and the only Island nation in the list. I was wondering weather they swim through the Palk Strait and come to India or not.

The quiz mentions that some of these refugees fled decades ago, so this doesn't represent current events in every case.

It's down to numbers, some countries have refugees (so called) leaving, but not so many. Can't see more than 79,000 leaving Cuba.

What are the time parameters for the answers? Refugees only for the year 2014? A few years leading up to 2014? All through history up to 2014? I assume not this latter one, but perhaps a change of wording in the description would help narrow it down?

Agree, it would have been helpful to know before taking the quiz. I looked up the source and the data comes from refugees who registered with the UNHRC from 2007-mid 2015.

@ander217 and @tylerdavid: You are misinterpreting the source data. The source data shows, for each year, the number of refugees that had registered in all prior years and had not yet returned to their home country. I added a caveat to make this more clear.

If it were counted as it's own country, then yes it would be. However, something should represent these refugees, as just its refugees in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon alone would be in the top 3.
