Sep 1, 2015
Why, because North Korea and South Korea could not SHARE an island? Now I know that you realize these countries are a part of the Asian continent, but it can be easy to get confused when people are new to geography. Particularly when there other examples such as: East Timor and West Timor (part of Indonesia), Papua New Guinea and Papua and West Papua (part of Indonesia), Haiti and Dominican Republic, and an extreme example of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus (which is not yet internationally recognized as a separate state but has been held separate with the help of the Turks since 1983). Let's give the 'gingy' a break. After all, I was once with a man who thought he was seeing Hawaii off the bow of the fishing boat we were on out of Long Beach. Dude had never even heard of Catalina.

Mrmooface: Putin has 5 ports that partly satisfy the requirements: Sevastopol is a deep sea warm water port, but the passage out from the Black sea is controlled by Turkey/NATO (although the Dardanelles are demilitarized, but still). Murmansk/Severomorsk has direct access to the arctic ocean, has quite mild winters and may even become ice free all year round in a few decades. Vladivostok has direct access to the pacific ocean and is ice-free (with the help of ice-breakers for ~two months of the year). Kaliningrad/Baltiysk/Kronstadt is mostly ice-free but the passage out from the Baltic sea is controlled by Sweden and Denmark/NATO. Tartus, Syria, is not big enough to accommodate large battleships, cruisers or carriers. It may be expanded, renovated and strengthened in the future, but of course the passage out from the Mediterranean is also controlled by other countries (Morocco/Spain/UK at the strait of Gibraltar, Egypt at the Suez canal). Putin should be satisfied with these!

Russia doesn't border Poland because of 1939. Kaliningrad Oblast was East Prussen. The regions from Poland didn't go to Russia, they went back to their rightful owners prior the the "Peace Of Riga" when Poland took land from the Baltics, Belarus and Ukraine.
