Quizmaster, listen to the people! 5/26 comments on this quiz are already for adding the US as an answer. That's almost 20%, which is a pretty big demographic if you ask me.
Taiwan's not understandable - it only broke relations off after China threatened a big tantrum if it didn't. That shouldn't be a reason to turn your back on your friends.
well looks like we broke Taiwanese non-relations, and Bhutan isn't a surprise since they only have relations with surrounding nations and the EU for the most part.
The only one I got so far has the lowest percentage - Bhutan. N Korea, Iran, and Syria didn't even pop into my head. I guess I was thinking bad relations was still relations of a kind. (facepalm)
The United States definitely has foreign relations with Taiwan. They just do so under a cover of a thin legal pretense that allows us to claim that we don't. The caveat to this quiz should say "No official US foreign relations." I bet the percentage of people who guess Taiwan would jump up significantly. The Wikipedia article describes the unofficial relations fairly well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan%E2%80%93United_States_relations
We sell Taiwan tons of military equipment and congress has enacted numerous laws including the "Taiwan Relations Act Affirmation." Taiwan maintains an official representation in Washington (just don't call it an embassy). I would say all of that counts as having relations.
The US not having relations with Palestine is one of the biggest hurdles keeping them from UN recognition, so it's kind of a catch-22. However, the most important issue facing Palestine is really Jetpunk recognition.
Taiwan certainly has a very healthy relationship. Just not officially. And up until recently no president has been stupid enough to question why that was.
"While the U.S. has no formal diplomatic relations with Bhutan, it maintains informal contact through its embassy in New Delhi." Pretty much saying that the US doesn't have an embassy there.
I'm not so sure. The U.S. has relations with Venezuela, just not with the current dictator. I have a feeling that Maduro might be on his way out as well. In any case, it's up for debate and there's no reason to change the quiz especially if I'll just change it back in a few weeks/months.
I'm surprised that Bhutan doesn't have relations with the U.S. and that people don't glance at the other comments before asking the same question ad nauseum.
The source map now shows Taiwan as a country with US relations. The article mentions the 2018 Taiwan Travel Act "formalizing high-level communications between Washington and Taipei as well as permitting intergovernmental contact at the highest level."
After getting all but Bhutan, I spent the whole rest of the time going through every country in the middle east the smaller countries in Oceania (since i know a few don't have embassies) and would have never thought of Bhutan!
