If you are going to do a basketball quiz, you need to include players gov't names (ie the name your momma gave you) and the name we know them by.

Nope. I don't expect Quizmaster to require Samuel Clemons for literary quizzes in lieu of Mark Twain. This is no different.

The undeserved honor only makes his mediocrity that much more obvious. Although "mediocrity" at the NBA level is still a relative concept.

I know your post is 4 yrs old but I had to comment anyway because of the sheer ignorance of it. 1 easy shot?? The shot was anything but easy and at the time Laettner was one of the best players in NCAA history. And I hate Duke.

Correction...he put on an offensive performance that will probably never be matched. He missed 0 shots in that game...not even from the free throw line.

If Hakeem Olajuwon had been eligible (he was not a U.S. citizen and had played nationally for Nigeria earlier in his career), he of course should have gone. Since he couldn't, and since the team architects appeared set on taking one college player, yes, of course, it should have been Shaq. Everyone outside a little corner of North Carolina knew that.

Laettner dominated college basketball the four years he was at Duke. Duke made the Final Four all four year he was in college and won two national championships. Sure Christian Laettner did not have as successful professional career as O'Neal. However, Laettner played for very average teams in the pros while O'Neal always had great teammates. They wanted one college player on the Dream Team in 1992. Based on college careers Laettner was the most deserving at the time.

"Laettner played for very average teams in the pros while O'Neal always had great teammates." Wait a minute, what? Did you watch basketball in the '90s/early 2000s? Shaq was completely unguardable. Kobe did not make that happen. Nor did Laettner have any similar or comparable talents.

Chris Laettner was even selected for Team Usa in 1998 but couldn't participate due to the lockdown.

It's kinda understandable if you didn't actually watch them play. Magic had retired from the NBA because of his HIV in 1991, so it's understandable that someone just wracking their brain for who the biggest names in basketball were at the time might have not have thought to try him.

The '92 Olympic team didn't take Shaq because he had signed a huge endorsement deal with Pepsi and Coke was the official sponsor of the Olympics. Remember, 1992 was the height of the so called "Cola Wars."

That's not a legitimate statement on many levels. Steph Curry is still relatively new to the league and is currently in his prime, whereas Duncan and Parker have been playing for years and have consistently racked up points. They're much older but still getting the job done. Take a look at Steph Curry in 10 years and then see if you still agree with that statement.

@thisisfun - That is just plain wrong. Magic, Bird, and Jordan on one team? Nobody is taking that down. Wasn't Carmelo on the team that couldn't even win the gold? I think Lebron and Duncan were on that team too. They got the Bronze in 2004.

Tony Parker is from France. He wouldn't be a part of a US Olympic team. Neither would Ibaka. And if you think that bunch you called off could have taken down the '92 bunch in their prime, I feel sorry for the basketball you've been watching.

It's two very different styles of ball. I think the modern guys would give these guys a run for their money only because nearly every player on the court these days can knock down long range shots. Dirk, Durant, Love, even Mirotic from the bulls are all 6-10 or taller and can drop 3 pointers. The days of a Patrick Ewing are dwindling. You would see the dream team drive to the bucket and play with their back to the basket. You would see the modern guys shooting long range shots, and as long as they are on, they could beat this team. BUT the dream team era defense was tighter, so their looks wouldn't be as good as they are now. It makes for an interesting discussion.

Every single time, I guess Isaiah Thomas and then I'm surprised when it doesn't work. Weird, since his exclusion was such a big deal at the time. The story apparently goes that others on the team, particularly Michael Jordan, didn't want him there, and Jordan may even have refused to play if Thomas was on the team.
