+1 there are many absent-minded professors (aren't they all?) that invented many things. Some of which might or might not start with an f (flying machine..)

It's a reference to a specific movie. I haven't seen said movie, but I still understood the reference. You're just looking to pick holes where there are none to be picked.

I loved seeing that clue. I grew up in the 2000s, but we had a few Fraggle Rock cassette tapes at home and I used to watch them like crazy. Maybe this is just because I'm not part of the original generation that watched it, but I feel like it never got as much attention as Sesame Street or the Muppets. Either way, it makes me happy to see one of my favorite kid's shows being acknowledged here :)

What does it say about jetpunkers when more people can name a wabbit hunter, some subterranean puppets and the style of Indiana Jones' hat than can name a principal character in (probably) Dickens' most famous novel?

That more people grew up in the 1950s to 1980s than the 1850s basically.

I guess that more people watch tv than read books perhaps.

But the thing with book knowledge vs tv knowledge is; With books you have to consciously pick up the book and start reading it, so you have chosen that very subject. With tv, once you turned it on, all sorts on things might come by which werent the original reason you turned the tv on for. (if you even had a specific thing you wanted to see)

Well, if that makes you happy, I couldn't name Dickens' character, but I couldn't name the wabbit hunter, the subterranean puppets or Indiana's hat as well.

No way is Oliver Twist more famous than A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, or A Tale of Two Cities. And it's probably not as famous as Great Expectations.
+3
Level 76
Apr 15, 2022
Oh, I'd think that Oliver Twist is more famous than David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, if only because it's had more high-profile adaptations. Most notably, the musical (and subsequent movie) Oliver! is almost certainly the best-known non-Scrooge Dickens adaptation among the general populace.

What does it say about jetpunkers that there's always some intellectual snob wanting to cast judgement on what constitutes 'acceptable' general knowledge?

Yup. I've read Oliver Twist multiple times but the name just slipped my mind during the timed quiz. That being said, the name of Indiana's hat also slipped my mind and I knew both of those xD

+3
Level 73
Apr 15, 2022
Nope. Especially having come to this quiz directly from the Unique Starting Letter - Countries by Continent quiz where there are arguments in the comments that Fiji is not included because official Jetpunk standard is that the other country is FSM, not Micronesia. So this is bucking the standard!
