Never heard of him. I am not American. I don't even know what NAACP means and not ashamed of that. On the other hand Conan O'Brien is somewhat of a legend in our country. He even met our president of the time. Both being redheads.

Honestly, Theodore Geisel should be accepted for Dr. Seuss. It's what I tried first and it is his real name.

One of my housemates from long ago told the story about how his parents got a visit from the FBI, who wanted to inform them that their son had joined a Communist front group in high school. the W.E.B DuBois Club. He claimed he didn't know about its politics--he thought he was joining The Boys Club.

The original silver $1 coin was Susan B Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was on the dollar long after they stopped being silver.
More recently Massachusetts natives Presidents Adams (both) and Kennendy have been on the $1 coin.
With the death of native George Bush, it is hard to say how long before or if they extend the series to him.

Does candidate mean something more specific in the US? Those 2 clues were extremely vague to me, could have been talking about candidates for absolutely anything. Of course, it would have helped if I had known where Dukakis and Kerry were from. And especially if I had known who Dukakis is...

In this instance, both were Presidential candidates. Even congressional candidates are rarely considered well-known enough to be known on the national stage (never mind international stage). Dukakis was the governor of Massachusetts before he ran for President.

ok ta, over here candidate isn't restricted to Presidential candidates, or even political candidates. In fact it's not even restricted to people - for example you could have a candidate for the Miss World competition or a chemical which is a candidate for the cure for cancer
