Chris Brown has been convicted of felony assault. He is a villain in every sense of the word. Jack the Ripper may not even have been a single person. I'll give you Hitler.

Agreed. One mistake in a heated argument, and he's labeled a villian for the rest of his life. It wasn't premeditated, and he hasn't done anything else since. Yet, he's listed alongside The Devil and Hitler. I wouldn't have such a problem with Chris Borwn and Simon Cowell if the list included more nonfictional, non-serial killers or non-terrorists.

FowlChr: "Villain- a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; scoundrel". Pretty sure Chris Brown ticked the "cruel", "involved in" and "crime" boxes, regardless of whether he is considered to be reformed. And I find it very interesting that his inclusion is more controversial to you than Simon Cowell or Guy Fawkes (not suggesting they shouldn't be there of course).

Terrorists are those who seek to affect public opinion by instilling fear in the average civilian and non-combatant that they could be next. They do this by specifically and intentionally targeting innocent people and/or public property (preferably with high visibility and symbolic value like Parlaiment or the WTC; strategic value is irrelevant), often trying to create as much carnage and mayhem as possible, and in as spectacular and public a way as possible. They are still terrorists whether they ultimately win or lose.

Just so you know, the answer to the fallen angel is Lucifer and not the Devil. Anyone who's actually read the bible will know the Devil can travel from heaven to Earth freely. Lucifer is a fictional character popularised by Paradise Lost by John Milton and has been cast out of heaven for his pride.

Satan is just a word that means "adversary" in Hebrew. But though the character did not exist in the oldest Jewish texts, the modern conception of him is as QuizMaster described him and Satan/The Devil/Lucifer/Beelzebub/etc have all become synonymous with that character.

+1
level 71
Nov 12, 2013
Guy Fawkes wasn't a Roundhead. The Roundheads were supporters of Parliament during the English Civil Wars, the first of which started nearly 40 years after Fawkes was executed. Fawkes was a Catholic who planned to blow up James I (and Parliament incidentally) because the king had not, in the opinions of the Gunpowder Plotters, done enough to ensure more freedom for Catholics to practice their religion in Protestant England. Like many religious loons, Fawkes presumably thought the best way to gain sympathy for his cause was a dreadful act of mass murder.

Not a great quiz in my opinion due to mixing fictional and real-life villains. I'm not the kind to say it is 'too soon' to bring up anything from the Holocaust, but I ALSO think a list that includes Cruella De Vil and Sideshow Bob on the same level of villainy of Adolf Hitler is kind of insulting to the millions whose' deaths he is responsible for, and it isn't even just the Holocaust (11 million human beings were murdered by Hitler's Nazis, made up of 6 million Jews and 5 million others including political prisoners, homosexuals, gypsies, ethnic Poles, and Soviet POWs), as Hitler started World War II by choice and an estimated 60+ million people were killed. So again, this isn't a big deal, BUT it would he better and more respectful if Hitler was removed from this list, because being portrayed at a level of villainy equal to that of the Grinch and Gordon Gekko was a mistake and you should correct it as quickly as possible.

I understand your feelings, Hdny42, but it's not as though Hitler was the only true villain on the list. Sure there are some pretty mild names on the list, but there are also more real villains there, too - Jack the Ripper wasn't exactly on the same level as Cowell or the grinch, either. If Hitler had been the only one among the fluff, you'd have a good point. But one could sort of rank the level of infamy of all these people and characters, and looking at it from that perspective Hitler wouldn't be so far removed from others on the list. I enjoyed the quiz.

Real life is rarely so clear cut in terms of good and evil compared to fiction. There are other choices for historic villains (at least to the western world, or whoever "won" whichever war they caused etc.), but fictional ones are less ambiguous and likely better known.

Apr 14, 2015
I don't feel the need to compare the levels of villainy between the villains included exactly because they are so incomparable. There's no way anybody in their right mind starts to compare Hitler to Cowell to Sideshow Bob to Jack the Ripper to Tonya Harding. Yet, they all fit under "villain".
